“The importance of the Free Trade”

The Argentine American Dialogue organized, for Monday 4 of December, a lunch to debate around different aspects of the international and regional trade.

This took place in the American Club, Viamonte 1133 10º Floor, and counted with the participation of academic, consulting, diplomatic, civil employees and representatives of different foundations.

Amb. Myles Frechette was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Americas Society and Council of the Americas between 2002 and 2004. Before 2002, he served as trade and business consultant as well as Executive Director of the North American- Peruvian Business Council (1998-2002); Special Coordinator for the Santiago Summit of the Americas (1997-1998); U.S. Ambassador to Colombia (1994-1997).

In addition to the activity that took place in the American Club, the Dialogue also organized for the Ambassador Frechette an encounter with the Committee of North America of the CARI (Argentine Council for International Relations), a debate in the ADE/UCES (Enterprise Managers Association/University of Enterprise and Social Sciences) and a meeting in the National Senate (jointly there with the CSIS, Center for Strategies and International Studies).

In his different presentations, the Ambassador indicated that Globalization has reshaped the world and the way countries relate, and free trade is the main force behind it. He also explored prospects for the Doha round and the future of regional trade relations in the aftermath of the November 7 midterm elections in the United States; and said that although there is little hope of a free trade area for the whole of the Americas materializing in the short term, the U.S. might seek to harmonize all existing agreements in order to better coordinate the region’s trade relations.
