"Arms Control and Non Proliferation under the Obama administration"
The Argentine American Foundation had the honour of having the participation of Dr. Gary Samore, Special Adviser of the President, and White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation, and Terrorism.
Dr. Samore is one of the most important people in charge to develop the strategy of North American nuclear non-proliferation, and is also member of the National Security Council. His priorities during 2009 are Russia, North Korea and Iran.
Considered as a “pragmatic nonideological”, he entered the Department of State in 1987, occupying several positions during the administrations of Reagan and Clinton, being one of the people in charge of the negotiation of the Treaty of 1994 between the USA and North Korea.
Also, after leaving the State Department in 2001, he directed the program of non-proliferation of the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London; later he was vice-president for global security and viability in the Foundation John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur and Director of Studies of the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations. As the Argentine ambassador in Washington, Héctor Timerman, said to Telam agency, "Gary Samore is the most important civil servant, of the administration of president Barack, that visited the country".
During his speach, carried out Monday 10 of August at CARI, Dr. Samore made reference to the different initiatives from President Obama, in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation, also doing reference to the cases of Iran and North Korea; and observing the important relation of cooperation that exists in the nuclear field between Argentina and the United States.
A nourished attendance of first level was present, including diplomats, representatives of the FFAA and Security forces, Training centers, Legislative Power, Academies, ARN, CNEA, etc.
